Operator 16 believes the stories we read and the worlds we disappear into don’t just entertain us. They shape us.
The first eighteen years were spent bouncing between a small farm town and a string of military bases. On the farm there were long evenings on the porch listening to old-timers trade tall tales, the kind with a crafty trickster at the centre and no tidy moral at the end.
There was also the run of a grandfather’s library. That is where Operator 16 fell for the hard-riding Westerns of Louis L’Amour, the sharp-tongued romances of Georgette Heyer, and the sideways genius of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.
It wasn’t until many years later that Operator 16 realised those stories and characters had never just been an escape.
They had sunk in. Choice after choice in real life, it turned out, had been shaped by the way a well-loved character once faced the same crossroads.
So when Operator 16 sat down to write, the aim was to nudge readers toward a better version of themselves. Not by pushing anyone’s ideas onto them, but by stirring up a sense of hope, and by introducing characters who, for all their mistakes and flaws, go on journeys worth learning from.
