How I dictate a first draft without losing the plot
Most authors who try dictation quit inside a week, and it is almost never because they cannot talk fast enough. It is because they sit down with a microphone the way they sit down with a keyboard, expecting polished sentences to come out, and then they hear the playback. The pauses, the ums, the sentence that started one way and ended another. That first listen convinces them dictation is not for them. It took me three false starts before I understood that the recording is not the draft. It is the raw material for the draft, and once I stopped judging it as prose the whole thing opened up.
